The single and music video for “Moon & Bouquet” is currently available worldwide. “Moon & Bouquet” serves as an opening song to the beginning of a second chapter in Sayuri’s career, making it a must-listen. Sayuri made a groundbreaking debut with her single “Mikazuki” in August of 2015. Her debut album, Mikazuki no Koukai topped Japan’s Oricon daily album chart the day it came out, and charted #3 on the Oricon weekly album chart. Her music and actions have gained a strong fan base mainly amongst people in their 10’s-20’s.

About

“Sanketsu Shoujo” Sayuri (Suffocating Girl Sayuri) is a singer-songwriter who resides within both the 2-dimensional world and the 3-dimensional world in parallel, putting her in a 2.5-dimentional world. Her new single, “Moon & Bouquet” is currently featured as the ending theme in TV anime Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. The single has topped Japan’s iTunes single rock chart, and charted #3 in top singles chart. The music video instantly received over 10,000 retweets, 20,000 likes, and as “Moon & Bouquet” trended, it came 2nd in Twitter’s trending chart. Sayuri’s official Twitter account gained over 1,300 followers through the release, and her account surpassed 150,000 followers.

By the “Sanketsu Sedai (suffocating generation)” and Sayuri relating to one another, the “Sanketsu Shoujo” came to new consciousness and emotions through the connection between herself and others. This synchronized with the world of Fate/EXTRA Last Encore, creating “Moon & Bouquet”. Where do I belong? What is my “world”? Sayuri has stepped forward in finding the answers and reasons to live deep within her consciousness; corresponding to the synchronization of what lies beyond “Mikazuki” with the relationship between servant Saber and protagonist Hakuno in Fate/EXTRA Last Encore, making the song a beginning to the second chapter in Sayuri’s career.

She has stood by her fellow “Sanketsu Sedai (suffocating generation)” with her songs, and through resonating with them, “Moon & Bouquet” was born; symbolizing a new beginning for Sayuri. The song synchronizes with the world of Fate/EXTRA Last Encore and shows us what lies beyond “Mikazuki”. Experience the new beginning and world of Sayuri with all five senses.

Sayuri released her 6th single and ending theme to anime Fate/EXTRA Last Encore, “Moon & Bouquet”, on February 28th, 2018.

Miyavi's DAY 2 World Tour Hits America Starting 5/8

In just over a week the "Samurai Guitarist" Miyavi will begin the American section of his world tour. It's been just over a year since we last saw him as part of the Asia on Tour showcase and this time he's going solo.

Miyavi's "DAY 2" World Tour has been ongoing since early March and has traveled across Japan, Asia, and Europe. The American tour begins on May 8th in Los Angeles (conveniently where Miyavi now calls home) and heads north to San Francisco and Seattle before heading into Canada and hitting the east coast of the United States. Longtime music venue Slim's will play host to the guitar wizard for the San Francisco leg of the trip. Tickets are $30 now but at the door will be $35. Dinner packages are available for $55.  This is the show where you'll find us from T-ONO.

Miyavi's latest album release is "Samurai Sessions vol.2" and features collaborations with a variety of musicians in a plethora of styles. Hip hop, rap, dance, and pop are all on the menu with that core Miyavi rock aspect to them. From taking a peek at the set lists of earlier stops on the DAY 2 tour we'll be treated to songs from not only Samurai Sessions vol.2 but also Samurai Sessions vol.1, his latest solo album Fire Bird, and others.  Early last year he released the greatest hits album "All Time Best 'Day 2' " from which the tour takes its name.

Later this year we'll be seeing him on the big screen as the powerful Byakuya Kuchiki in the live-action movie adaptation of Kubo Tite's manga Bleach. Bleach will be officially released on July 20 in Japan. If we're lucky this year's Anime Expo in Los Angeles will be graced with a special screening of the film much like last year's Anime Expo and Tokyo Ghoul. At the very least a panel should be expected.

5/8 Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theater
5/11 San Francisco, CA - Slim's
5/13 Seattle, WA - The Crocodile
5/16 Toronto, ON (CAN) - The Phoenix Theater
5/18 Philadelphia, PA - Theater of the Living Arts

SCANDAL United States and Mexico Tour 2018

Popular Japanese all-female rock band SCANDAL will be hitting American shores this September. It's been a long three years since they last graced our shores with a tour but that will be fixed in a few months. Their newest album HONEY follows previous album YELLOW and continues the trend of their evolving sound that started more than twelve years ago.

Intrepid fans on the internet have discovered a few new tidbits of interest to anyone stateside.  Not quite a leak since they're publicly viewable on both Facebook and venue pages but not quite an official announcement.

UPDATE 5/4: The tour has officially been announced!  Looks like they'll be heading to Mexico too (dates TBA).  The official name of the tour is "Special Thanks."

As of now we have four concert dates spanning the country:

September 5, at the Playstation Theater in New York, NY
September 7, at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA
September 9, at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA
September 16, at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, TX

UPDATE 5/3: Presale for the San Francisco show at the Regency Ballroom is up now.  The password is GONNABEMAY.  Click here for a link to the concert page at the Regency or here to buy tickets.

The general on-sale date for San Francisco is May 8 at 9AM sharp. Tickets start at $25 for early bird (normal price $40) and VIP is $150. At the door prices will be $45. All other dates will go on sale that same day. Presale will, depending on the venue and ticket agency, occur a few days earlier. Citibank, American Express, and others will participate in presales.

This is still preliminary information so there is still the possibility of more dates being added to the roster. The previous tour in 2015 made stops in Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Chicago.  The band is currently touring Japan in support of HONEY with plans to visit various countries in Asia.

In less than two months Miku Expo will begin its journey through North America. Those of you in Europe were resigned to watch again from a distance. Your patience has been rewarded: Miku Expo Europe has been officially announced with shows in France, Germany, and the UK!

Hatsune Miku and company has traveled from their homes in Japan to Asia and North America. Now they're coming to Europe for the first time ever.

Independent producers banded together with artists and animators to create entire worlds and stories from scratch. The Miku Expo series of concerts is a demonstration of what the pros can do and a live backing band will play alongside the holographic field technology that has graced stages across the world.

Three shows have been announced:

Love Live: Hakodate Unit Carnival Delayed Screenings Announced

Looking forward to the Love Live Aquors concert at Anime Expo? Need a quick fix before that? How about checking out the Hakodate Unit Carnival?

The main Love Live concerts generally focus upon the full group songs for Aquors with a unit song thrown in here and there for fan service. The Hakodate Unit Carnival, as its name might imply, focuses upon the subunits AZALEA, CYaRon!, and Guilty Kiss. Frenemy pair Saint Snow will also perform onstage. If you've watched season 2 you've probably noticed them getting closer to the friend side of things.

While the event itself has already taken place this past weekend there are a variety of delayed screenings available in both North America, Europe, and Asia. Most screenings will be on the weekend of May 12 but some are on May 19 or later depending on the location.

California has quite a few showings with screenings located in both northern and southern California. San Francisco proper has one showing and two others in Larkspur and Sacramento to the north. Los Angeles itself does not have a screening but does have one in relatively nearby Cerritos. Note to anyone going to the San Francisco showing: go early. Seating at the front is, from experience, not the most forgiving. Further American screenings are located in Washington, Texas, Colorado, Florida, New York, and others. Please view the full list for details.

Most screenings will be of the April 28 show. A few (Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Indonesia) will play the April 27 show

For those of you who don't mind a spoiler or two you can check out the set list here.

Babymetal's 2018 US Tour Has a Rough Start

Babymetal's 2018 US Tour Has a Rough Start

This is a developing situation. We will give you updates as soon as they are available.

All may not well be in Babymetal land. At the beginning of the month, "BABYMETAL RECORDS" was officially formed, the band dropped a thrashing new single yesterday called "Distortion", and a new album based on the "THE CHOSEN SEVEN" concept looked to be the natural direction.  Everything was looking up for their US tour until tonight's opening concert in Kansas City which had one big problem: Yui is missing.

Babymetal is composed of three principle members: Sumetal, Moametal, and Yuimetal. Sumetal handles the bulk of the vocals and Moametal and Yuimetal both handle dancing for all songs and vocals for one or two. A full backing band codenamed the "Kami band" handles all the instruments and are just as important to the group as a whole as the girls themselves. Over the past few years the girls have had meteoric success playing across the globe and at many prestigious festivals. They've created quite a stir amongst traditional metalheads on one hand while being accepted by some of those same metalheads' heroes on the other including Rob Zombie, Metallica, Judas Priest, and many others.

During December, Yuimetal was absent from two of the group's shows in Hiroshima due to illness. No explanation was ever given as to what she was afflicted by (which is her right) but at least we got word of it. What is worrying is that she was absent tonight with no prior notice given to fans at the venue, online, or otherwise. Yui is on posters and media for the tour so being unexpectedly absent is highly unusual and even now, hours after the show, there has been no official word.  With the accidental death of longtime guitarist Mikio Fujioka just before the end of last year and now Yui's absence, cracks might be beginning to show in the fox mask.

The set list was just an hour long with ten songs. Three songs were new (including "Distortion") but this is no way to start a tour, or any show in general, where you're a headliner.

Understandably fans are worried.

Even Japanese fans are getting antsy.

The most concerning part is the fact there has been no announcements from talent agency Amuse. It's been a complete media blackout and this has fueled many a rumor and speculation. More benign reasons like visa issues or sickness would be an easy way to assuage fans but the silence is defeaning.

Some people have gone full negative and understandably upset on the situation since there is no explanation yet.

The next show is on Thursday. Hopefully it will herald Yui's return and some sort of explanation.  Is it all just part of Babymetal mastermind Koba's grand plan?  Is her absence part of the story of "THE CHOSEN SEVEN?"  If not, and if there isn't an official announcement, the rumor mill will continue to go nuts.

Hopefully this has not come to pass.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Returns to America for "THE SPOOKY OBAKEYASHIKI" tour

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu Returns to America for

In less than a week Kyary Pamyu Pamyu will make her return to America and one of those stops is in San Francisco. The last time she was here I missed out (a scheduling conflict involving ye olde San Diego Comic Con) but this time there's nothing to keep me from seeing this show.

For those of you unfamiliar with Kyary she's a fashion icon and musician known for her whimsical style and can be described as cuteness overload. She has a special quality to her that cannot be aptly described and is best experienced to gain an understanding of what Kyary is. Her music will have you unconsciously tapping your feet and nodding your head in tune to it.

The tour is titled "THE SPOOKY OBAKEYASHIKI ~PUMPKINS STRIKE BACK~" and is inspired by Japanese haunted houses. The traditional Japanese ghost ("obake") is the name of the game and promo images feature a wasa-obake (umbrella ghost) and a many tailed fox amongst others. Kyary being Kyary almost guarantees you a fun night that will not disappoint and photos from her Japanese concerts of this same tour show off an elaborate two-tier stage with a lot of stage effects and even some acrobatics. For a lot of bands it is a challenge to bring their full emsemble overseas but when I saw her in 2014 she brought a detailed set on tour so it's possible we might see that happen again although somewhat stripped down in size for convenience.

Expect to see many of her hit songs like Fashion Monster and Pon Pon Pon along with ones like "Crazy Party Night" and "Harajuku Iyahoi." Hopefully we'll be treated to a performance of her newest song "Kimi no Mikata" which was released in April.

The US tour is comprised of three stops in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The San Francisco stop is at the Regency Ballroom where she played both of the previous times she was here and is presented by Goldenvoice.

6/18 New York, NY - Playstation Theater (tickets available here)
6/20 San Francisco, CA - The Regency Ballroom (tickets available here)
6/22 Los Angeles, CA - Fonda Theater (tickets available here)

With any luck we'll be able to give you a full rundown of the night next week and with photos to boot.

Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music From the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki report

Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music From the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki report

Memorial Day weekend's Fanime convention would have something very special attached to it: the Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert - Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki. The Symphony Silicon Valley performed five sold-out shows over four days at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Mamoru Fujisawa, professionally known as Joe Hisaishi, has been the composer for almost every film written by Hayao Miyazaki with the exception of 1995's Whisper of the Heart. Hisaishi's career spans more than 40 years with almost half of them in service to Miyazaki. This concert serves as a showcase and celebration of his music which has been a staple of Studio Ghibli films.

Something unique about holding the concert series during Fanime is the attendees. Fanime, as an anime convention, is known for having thousands of cosplayers and anime fans present. Contrast that with the symphony where the usual concertgoer dresses up a little, or at least wears a nice dress or some slacks and a good shirt. Not this weekend. I myself was in plain clothes and was not alone by far. Plenty of others were in all manner of dress and some in costumes inspired by the Studio Ghibli films.

To be clear the concert itself is not a new one; it has, in some shape or form, been performed for about a decade. It was first billed as a celebration of Joe's 25th anniversary back in 2008 and that number has increased to 35 years at this point. More importantly it's stateside and in San Jose which makes it the only American performances ever. This is a once in a lifetime chance and I was glad to be here.

The program started with music from 1984's Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind. After getting the symphony started Joe himself hopped on piano and through the night he would swap between playing and conducting. Footage from each movie accompanied the music on a large screen. Opening song "The Legend of the Wind" gives the audience a taste of the journey that they're about to embark upon before being followed by the speedy "The Battle between Mehve and Corvette." The songs flow into each other seamlessly and before you know it the first segment is complete. That can be said for all of the segments. It's a whirlwind tour spanning multiple decades of films ranging from the oldest like Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service to ones more modern like Ponyo and Howl's Moving Castle.

joe1

Remember when I said that this was first performed a decade ago? Something missing from the original is music from Miyazaki's latest film The Wind Rises (formerly final film up until he announced the production of How Do You Live?) but more recent versions of the concert have fixed that. The Wind Rises tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi who designed two of Japan's fighter aircraft during World War II and a three-fold tale of imagination, love, and loss. Three songs were selected from the film: "A Journey (A Dream of Flight)," "Nahoko (The Encounter)," and "A Journey (A Kingdom of Dreams)." Mandolinist Howard Kadis participates throughout this portion of the set and helps bring the sound of that era alive.

World-class soprano Lisa Vroman and vocalist Mai Fujisawa are featured throughout the night. Vroman's performance during Princess Mononoke's titular song is easily a match for Masako Hayashi's performance ten years prior at Japan's Budokan concert hall; sung in Japanese, music truly does transcend language. Fujisawa effortlessly sings "One Summer's Day" and "Reprise" from Spirited Away and at the end of that segment Joe proudly proclaims that she is his daughter (which, if you know his real name, is not much of a surprise).

jo2

People who looked at the program may have noticed that the Reedley High School Symphonic Band is listed on the credits but with no mention of what they would be doing. The music from Laputa: Castle in the Sky would be their time to shine. They entered on both sides of the symphony hall and ringed the edges of the room giving the performance a 3D quality to it so the music came from front, sides, and behind you. This echoes the performance from the Budokan (amongst other performances) where a local band is invited to take part and it is quite the honor for those involved.

joe3

But all good things must come to an end and at least we got to close on a high note. My Neighbor Totoro which holds an almost godlike status even among Ghibli works would take the honor. The Fujisawa/Vroman duet along with the choir carry the night to a fun ending with a trio of songs including "Hey Let's Go" and "My Neighbor Totoro."

Fanime is a four day event. The first day you spend just getting there. The second you are hitting your stride and having fun. The third is a mix of fun but also dread as you realize that as the last night you will be leaving tomorrow. But, for just a couple of hours, that feeling of dread completely disappeared. For a couple of hours I forgot that it was almost time to go back to reality. Perhaps in a few years when Miyazaki's swan song How Do You Live? is released there will be another rendition of this concert for the fourtieth anniversary. I'm sure Hisaishi's music will have no less impact then than it does now.

Wow. What a hell of a way to start Anime Expo 2018.

The Aquors concert on Day 0 was truly a once in a lifetime event that will likely never be replicated. If you've been living under a rock Aquors is the hyper popular group at the central focus of Love Live: Sunshine. This is the first time that Aquors, and Love Live as a whole, has held a full, one man, overseas concert. For a lot of people this was THE event to see at Anime Expo and I'd be hard pressed to disagree. Anisong World Matsuri has quickly become a cornerstone event of Anime Expo and it is hard to imagine an AX without one.

The Love Liveian juggernaut has been the reigning queen of the anime industry for many years now. It has spawned a variety of pretenders to the throne and with regards to the franchises that came before it it has quickly outpaced them with a decidedly global appeal. People around the world know Love Live and would kill to be able to see these girls in person. Attending the Japanese concerts involves a lot of luck as getting a ticket means winning the lottery (not to mention having to fly to Japan too). Having it stateside eliminates both of those barriers to entry and makes it a unique experience for fans over here, myself included.

This is the third time the girls have been to Los Angeles but the first where they got a time slot all to themselves. Their first visit back at Anime Expo 2016 was an introduction of sorts; there was no performance at all but just a Q&A along with a screening of the anime and a few of their music videos. Their second visit in 2017 had them take the stage alongside three other groups (Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls, Macross' Walkure, and Wake Up Girls). Time constraints meant they could only do a handful of songs. This year marks the first time they've been able to have a full two-hour show. It might not be as long as the lives in Japan which clock in at about 3.5 hours but I'll take it.

Last Saturday I saw the recorded screening of the Saitama stop of "Wonderful Stories" which is the name of the current Japanese tour. The girls looked like they were genuinely having fun with nary a care in the world. They've been doing shows for years now and have countless hundreds of manhours of practice to the point that being on stage may as well be second nature. It's a far cry from the disaster that befell their first live (the "piano incident"). Rikako had taken upon herself the daunting task of learning to play piano from scratch and play it onstage during one of their songs. Day 1 went without a hitch but day 2 resulted in her losing track during the song and breaking into tears. She was quickly comforted by Anju-san and the others, recomposed herself, and on the next attempt nailed it. Some might even consider it the crucible of these girls' struggles. In contrast the ease and grace that these nine exhibited in Los Angeles is the mark of their current quality. We've truly been able to see the girls blossom into their own.

And as for the live itself? It clocked at two hours and spanned the entirety of the girls career. They started with the two songs from the seond Love Live: Sunshine opening single: "Mirai no Boura wa Shitteru no" and "Kimi no Hitomi o Meguru Bouken." This was followed by one of the most important things in the Love Live franchise: self-introductions. It sounds simple enough but it's a ritual that baptises the beginning of a live. It's a sign of respect between idol and fan where one calls and the other responds.

Two more group songs ("Kimi no Kokoro wa Kagayaiteru kai?" and "MIRAI TICKET") would give way to subunit songs. With the subunits the nine girls are split into three groups of three each with their own theme and style. Honestly I had not expected subunit songs; with just two hours of time Aquors could easily fill it up with group songs.

The three units are as follows:

CYaRon! (Chika, You, and Ruby) are the fun, energetic ones. Their songs are lively and enjoyable. I'll admit there is something fun about yelling "We are CYaRon!" during one of their songs.

Azalea (Hanamaru, Dia, and Kanan) is a group whose model is the azalea flower. Their message is one of purity and their songs exhibit as much. I would describe their songs as whimsical.

Of course one cannot forget Guilty Kiss. Consisting of Riko, Mari, and Yohane, their songs bring a mix of metal and eletronic dance to the stage. They are by far my most favored of the three groups. Strawberry Trapper is one of my favorite Aquors songs and you could tell it was others' too from the pop of the crowd as the opening bars came over the speakers. Many super bright Ultra Orange glowsticks were lit across the theater.

As the girls came onstage for the third and final time one could not help but notice that they were wearing t-shirts. Japanese artists often use their tour t-shirts during the encores and tonight it was a signal that the end was near.

This seems like an apt time to describe one of the greatest moments in foreign Love Live fan history. There are tales of the Yousoroad and Kananrail. Those are crowd participation excercises where the songs Koi no Aquarium and HAPPY PARTY TRAIN are met with attendees working together to create a coordinated visual that spans the entire theater. Both of those songs, up to this point in the concert, had gone unheard. This was strange as they are almost a given at every live the girls have done. Instead we saw the birth of the Aquorainbow. Through the day potential concertgoers must have noticed a throng of people handing out flyers with instructions about a multicolored array of penlights and glowsticks. This was an effort born out of a desire to make an American mark on Love Live fandom. Different sections of the crowd would, at a certain point during "Yuuki wa doko ni? Kimi no Mune ni!" would ignite their lights with one of the nine colors specific to their section. This was an attempt as celebrating Aquors' first full US concert.

And you know what? It worked. It worked beautifully. The girls noticed and were surprised; they clearly expressed as much.

A photo taken by one of the folks into the mezzanine shows the result. From my spot in the crowd it was a little hard to see. Being on the same level does not lend itself well to seeing the big picture. Take a look:

I once said that the only way AX could have surpassed last year's show was to have a full concert and that's exactly what they delivered. Those two hours flew by in a flash. For a lot of us we will never get to see something like this again; I'm certainly glad I had the chance to take part of it.  I'm not sure where Anisong World Matsuri can go from here. They've already conquered the highest mountain that is bringing Aquors here for a solo concert. How do you surpass that let alone match it?  Whatever that answer is I'm sure it'll be worth coming to see.

Thanks to @cowboybibimbop for the set list!

A retrospective about Anisong Matsuri's Japan Super Live 2018

On Friday, July 6, Anime Expo hosted the second of this year's Anisong World Matsuri concerts at Microsoft Theater. This one would be the Japan Super Live and composed of the lineup of Aimer, Yuki Kajiura, May'n, and Senketsu Girl Sayuri. We at t-ono.net had a few of our staff attending the concert and decided to hold a round table discussion with our thoughts.

Charles To, Roger Lee, and Brian Lee contributed to this article

BRIAN: I'm Brian and I'm one of our writers and photographers.

ROGER: I'm Roger and one of our photographers.

CHARLIE: I'm Charlie and one of our writers.

WHAT WERE YOUR GENERAL THOUGHTS ON SUPER LIVE?

C: I thought it was a very solid lineup with a lot of variety for everyone. Super Live was a highlight of Anime Expo since I'm not into all the idol stuff. I especially enjoyed Aimer.

R: I liked that they changed it up with Anisong Matsuri: Japan Super Live this year. They've done a lot of idol stuff in previous years and while I used to be heavily into idols like AKB I have since got out of it. I saw both Super Live and Kawaii Live and enjoyed Super Live more.

B: As a Love Live fan I have to say that I enjoyed that concert the most but Super Live was a close contender. It was a great lineup with two artists I am very familiar with (May'n and Yuki Kajiura) and two that I was not (Aimer and Sayuri).

HOW WERE YOUR SEATS?

R: I was in row PP, right around the sound booth. It was right in the middle and had a decent view but when everyone stood up you couldn't see much.

C: I was in the pit and had a great location. When I got my ticket I didn't realize there was only two rows in front of me. I was also close to the aisle and that gave me some extra room. I did have a couple of problems in that everyone stood up and was waving penlights around. I had expected it to some degree since it is the pit but I couldn't see while sitting except for a small crack.

B: I was a little behind Charlie in VIP row D which I managed to snag during general sales. I got lucky and the people in front of me weren't really standing. One sat in his seat a lot. My view was a little left of center. I believe all three of us didn't have lights but for me at least it let me focus more on the music and the performance than on trying to keep up with the wotagei. I forgot mine in the car but that ended up being a blessing.

R: From my seat I had a pretty good view of the room as a whole. Super Live was very full including the mezzanine behind me. In comparison Kawaii Live had a lot more empty spaces especially on the left and right.

MAY'N

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 01 Mayn

May'n has been active ever since she was scouted by HoriPro at the age of 13.  She is the singing voice for Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier and her songs have since been featured in a multitude of anime series.  Her most recent work was for The Ancient Magus Bride

R: May'n had a good lineup. She opened Super Live strong, very upbeat. Between me and you (Brian) we've been to all of her concerts in California. You'd think I'd be tired of listening to her music but it sounded really good and was a great starter. It got everyone pumped up and on the edge of their seats and made people want to wave their glowsticks.

B: If you think about it it's partly her fault that everyone started standing.

C: This is actually my first time seeing May'n but I think she was a really good choice to kick things off. She was energetic and has an explosive stage presence that made it really lightstick friendly unfortunately (for me).

B: I'd say she's the most J-poppy of the four if that makes any sense. Most of her songs are very upbeat and have punch. It's been nine years since we first saw her at the 2010 Anime Expo and the last time we saw her was less than a year ago at last year's J-Pop Summit. Basically the reason I went to my first Anime Expo was because of Macross Frontier and May'n and Megumi Nakajima.

R: I wasn't planning on going that year until they announced Macross people and AKB48 and then I had to go. She's most well known for Macross Frontier where she was the singing voice of Sheryl (Nome).

B: I would have liked more Macross but they only have six songs to work with. She did sing two Macross songs and it was a given that the last one would be "Diamond Crevasse." She always sings that one.

R: That was one I expected her to sing. I also expected her to sing "Lion" too because she's sang that a lot but she did sing "Northern Cross" which is another popular one. I enjoyed "One in a Billion" because I've been watching Isekai Shokudou. I was surprised to hear it.

B: I would have liked to hear "Universal Bunny." I really like that song. Even got it signed by her back in 2010.

C: How did it sound for you guys? It was kind of loud in the front and I didn't have earplugs.

R: I was fine in the middle and everything was equal. I think I still would have liked earplugs though.

B: PSA for you kids at home, always bring earplugs. I always bring mine to shows.

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 02 Mayn

R: Oh I have to ask, where did people get glowsticks from? Did you have to buy them or did they give them away?

B: The fancy ones with color changing lights some people get online. King Blade is the name. A lot bought them at previous shows so some have them from last year or bought them this year. I have a couple of Love Live ones that thankfully I didn't have to wait in line for. The lines were crazy this year.

R: You have to manually change the colors right?

B: Most of the time. I think with the Kill la Kill glowsticks they were remote controlled

R: I was under the impression that someone had a control they could use on everyone's lights. Who decides which color to use? Does someone just go first and everyone else have to follow them?

B: There's theme colors, especially with idols. I'm not sure where it starts but some people in Japan decide "ok for this song it's red and this song it's blue." The Love Live concert had something cool where everyone in the crowd helped make a rainbow, actually.

R: I saw some guys on the side with some really bright orange ones. What are those?

B: There's a thing called the "ultra orange" (UO) and it's a super bright glowstick that only lasts a few minutes and you're supposed to use them at really hype points in a song. Some guys are at the level where they literally buy boxes and use them throughout the show though.

C: I had a guy next to me with UOs put away his lights, pull out the UOs from a back pocket, and slam them on the chair in front of him.

B: It's kind of fun to do it that way instead of the normal cracking with your hands as long as no one is in front of you

C: Oh there was a girl in front of him and he could have cracked her upside the head. Scared the hell out of her. Anyway, that's our segue into lightsticks

SAYURI

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 03 Sayuri

Sanketsu-girl Sayuri began her career playing guerilla street shows and in tiny venues across Japan before forming the duo LONGTAL.  She was eventually noticed by some bigger names in the industry and made her major debut at the age of 18

R: Before the concert I honestly thought she was a filler. I looked at the guest books and saw she was a singer and looked up what she did. She's very new and hasn't done too much compared to the others.

B: Sayuri is the one I knew the least about but she's a rags to riches story. Dropped out of high school so she could do street performing and somehow ends up doing anisongs. I saw a video the other day where she was doing a street performance but now there was hundreds of people surrounding her.

C: I wasn't familiar with her but I liked her visual style. Her songs were very good. I think she did a song for fate, "Tsuki no Hanataba," for Fate/Extra Last Encore. She also did a song for Erased (Boku Dake ga Inai Machi) that was popular last year. I figure people know her the most for that and Fate. I enjoyed her more than May'n. I thought she seemed down to earth. Kind of a similar air of mysteriousness like Aimer.

R: She was a down to earth mellow singer. Different from May'n who is super upbeat and draws people to her.

B: I could envision her in her old days sitting on the side of a road just singing away like that. If you think about it she's the one who's changed the least, or maybe the least produced. Like you're seeing Sayuri as Sayuri.

C: She wasn't wearing shoes, don't know if you noticed.

B: I was actually going to ask about that because I couldn't really see people's feet because the stage is only so high and the crowd was standing. When she came out at the end I was wondering if she had anything on. So thanks for that answer.

R: My view was really different from you guys'. I spent a lot of time looking at the TV monitors. It was hard to see the stage from my perspective because of all the glowsticks and people standing.

C: I thought her visuals were interesting. I liked how she had one of those lyric videos like you see on YouTube so I could see the words. It felt like an AMV.

B: One of the things during MC she said "I want to come back again so please stay healthy." I thought that was cute compared to your usual "I'll come back again" thing. She said it was her first time in America so we got to see a world first here.

C: I would see her again. I would like to see more when she does more theme songs. I'm sure we'll hear more of her.

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 04 Sayuri

AIMER

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 05 Aimer

Aimer is well-known for her sweet ballads and unique, husky voice.  She has contributed to many anime series including Fate, Bleach, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and more.  This marks her second appearance at Anime Expo after first attending in support of Fate: Unlimited Blade Works.

C: I have a lot to say.

R: We'll let you kick it off as our resident expert.

C: I think she's recently become really popular to the point she should be considered the headliner of the event.

R: Let me jump in here, is this your first time seeing her in person?

C: No, the fourth.

R: How would you compare her to the other times you've seen her?

C: Compared to her first AX visit in 2015 I think she's improved a lot with being on the bigger stage and felt much more confident. I was really impressed. I've see her multiple times in Japan and she just improves year after year. As a long time fan of Aimer I really feel as if she's renewed herself as a performer and artist. She has a distinct style down to her choice of clothing and look and for this concert she picked something simple yet elegant.

R: It was a white dress, right? Kind of like a summer dress, no?

C: It was sleeveless and long. I think she was very mature and I think it was apparent from her speaking style.

B: You'll have to expound on that as most of us could not see because of the whole backlight thing and the camera blur.

C: A lot of people have noticed that she does not reveal her face very often in her public appearances and she's stated the main reason is because she wants her audience to focus on her voice and music but it just makes people more curious.

B: I swear I've seen her face before in official concert videos.

C: In Japan you can see her face more so she's not really hiding it anymore. Just hiding it from us. I think maybe if she gets more comfortable with her American audience she'll show her face. From the pit I could see her face though.

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 06 Aimer

C: As far as her set list goes I think it was very appropriate for AX. Obviously well known for her Fate music like "Brave Shine." More than half of the songs were Fate. One big surprise for me was "ref:rain" from Koi wa Ameagari no You ni. I think it's really good along with "Last Stardust" to show her skill as a performer. Her specialty is ballads and ref:rain is one of the first ones she's done in a while.

R: I wasn't too surprised because artists like to have at least one song they've done recently. I enjoyed listening to it because I've been listening to that album a lot lately. She has a very nice voice.

C: I tell everyone this but no one ever listens to me...

R: I've been listening to her a lot while driving. From what I hear on my car speakers and onstage is pretty much the same. Like it's legit voice. It was really pleasant to hear without autotune; just simple vocals and piano. Really enjoyable for me.

B: I guess when you're singing a lot of ballad kind of songs you have to be good because your voice is the main thing. With a rock band you have all the other music behind you and it's a whole experience. Aimer can just sing without an accompaniment at all and you'd get just as good a show.

C: As a long time listener her song style has changed a lot to something more upbeat. When she started out she used to be very polarising because on one hand a song would be really depressing but at the same time it'd be sort of wholeful with a very dramatic tone.

B: What would you have liked to hear? What do you think was missing?

C: It would have been nice to hear her non-anime songs but I mean it is Anisong Matsuri after all.

R: I enjoyed the ones she did sing. "Brave Shine," "ref:rain," I enjoyed those. Maybe a slower, moodier song like "ninelie" would have been nice to hear. Overall I had no complaints about her performance. It was very satisfying. Since it's my first time seeing her live I wasn't sure what to expect. With May'n and Yuki Kajiura I knew what to expect but for only seeing her once she's at the top of my list for artists who performed that night.

C: I don't think a lot of people noticed but "Brave Shine" is a song she sings every single time at every live I've been to. It is because that song is very important to her as she went through a very difficult time shortly after it was released. I believe it was when she temporarily lost her voice before a tour.

R: Everyone has a song that means a lot to them that they'll never get tired of singing like May'n with "Diamond Crevasse."

B: One thing I will say is that I've been mispronouncing her name for quite a while. When she first said "Ehmer" I thought "whoops." Just imagine if we were in an interview and we kept saying "Eyemer"

R: That would have been a good question actually; the origin for her name and pronunciation. Maybe next time. I think it'd be nice if she did a US tour. Both May'n and Yuki Kajiura had tours and Aimer is really popular so I don't see why not.

YUKI KAJIURA

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 07 Yuki Kajiura

Yuki Kajiura is best known for her composer work on a variety of anime and video games such as the .hack// series, Kara no Kyoukai, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, and Sword Art Online.  She is the lead element of her solo project, FictionJunction

B: Yuki Kajiura has been around quite a while, probably even longer than I've been into anime.

R: I first listened to her during .hack. .hack is from a while back but songs are still popular.

B: When Key of the Twilight came on I got pumped. Her .hack songs have a specific sound to them and the moment you hear it you can recognize them immediately. It's old, we're all getting there, but it was nice to hear a throwback like that.

R: I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard Kajiura was going to be there because it didn't list any of her vocalists at first. I was halfway expecting her video game songs or something like that. Once I saw her vocalists I was like "Oh, I know where this is going." I didn't recognize two of her vocalists though. I knew Kaori, and then there was Yuriko and Joelle? I don't really know about them.

B: They worked with her under FictionJunction

R: When I think of FictionJunction I think more Kaori and Wakana but they weren't her regulars and I think it's because of the whole Kalafina thing.

B: For those who don't know Kajiura just left her previous label, Space Craft Produce and opened up her own solo label. She definitely can, she's been around for long enough that she doesn't need a label. Does get a bit tricky for Kalafina because they also lost one of their members, Keiko, on top of losing Kajiura. They're still technically around but they haven't done much this year. They might have to take a new direction because Kalafina's music was Kajiura's.

R: Kind of like Nobuo Uematsu leaving Square

B: So Kajiura had some Fate, some Sword Art, .hack. Was happy about that last one. I know it's kind of tricky because of the whole Kalafina situation but I would have liked some Madoka Magica and Kara no Kyoukai. I mean a few years ago Madoka was huge. It was everywhere that year. Tons of people were cosplaying it at AX.

R: Will we ever hear those songs again?

B: That's the rub. Could have had some older stuff too but I'm not sure if people would have recognized Xenosaga or Mai Hime.

R: I would have liked to hear "Akatsuki no Kuruma" from Gundam. Gundam was one of the turning points for anime in America so I think people would have known it.

C: Overall I think it was really good to help mellow out the crowd. Where I was positioned in the pit I could see her face and she was really into the music. I was impressed. She was always smiling.

B: Probably just happy to be back in front of a huge crowd here. The last time we saw her was Anime Expo 2012, right? That time she had a concert all to her own. She brought FictionJunction with her.

R: You can chalk up all her recent work to Fate and Sword Art Online. Will they ever make another .hack?

B: Only if it sells. It's gotten to the point where Sword Art has taken over things and a lot of people don't even know .hack exists. It was one of the first isekai, stuck in a game things.

R: Sword Art wasn't even supposed to be popular. When we interviewed the author he said he put a lot more effort into Accel World's story and everything and Sword Art was just something he put together. Everyone liked it more so he ran with it. I enjoyed Accel World but I don't think they'll bring it back. It definitely got overshadowed.

RMMS Anisong World Matsuri 2018 08 Yuki Kajiura

HANA NO UTA / FINAL COMMENTS

For the final song Yuki Kajiura called Aimer back onstage and they performed "Hana no Uta" from Heaven's Feel: Presage Flower

C: It was a collaboration destined for perfection. Very appropriate for the Fate series which has become a centerpoint of Anime Expo over the years.  It would have been a waste not to sing this song together. I think this was also the first time they've performed it on stage together.

B: That's what Aimer said, that it's the first time they've done it live. That's another world first we were lucky to see. Were you wondering where it was?

C: I was very much wondering and was disappointed it wasn't part of Aimer's set earlier. It made sense to keep it til the end though. I was very happy. There's still two more movies in the Heaven's Feel trilogy so hopefully we'll get to see those songs live too.

R: It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that many people will never get to see live. Even in Japan it'd be a rarity. If anything the competition for tickets is way higher over there to something like this with lotteries and all.

C: That's one of the good things about Anime Expo. It's a good opportunity for people in the US to experience and it doesn't happen too often in Japan.

B: It's only been three or four years that Anisong has been going on. In the past AX would bring one or two artists and they'd do a full concert which was nice but you didn't get the variety. That's both good and bad because while you get variety they also only have six or seven songs worth of time available.

C: Honestly I only came to AX this year because Aimer was involved. I was about to go to Disneyland and when they announced Aimer I was like "Nope, we're going to AX."

B: For this AX I saw three concerts and if it had just been those three concerts I think I would have been totally happy. If the con hadn't happened at all but the concerts still did I would have still said I had a great time.

R: I wouldn't mind it if they brought Aimer again next year. Maybe Perfume. Exile?

C: I'd like to see J Soul Brothers but they're not anime

B: That's one bad thing. They're trying to stick to just anisongs. I mean it is Anime Expo but we've had non-anime bands in the past like Porno Graffiti. Last year we had Asian Kung Fu Generation's first US shows and they played a lot of their non-anime songs alongside others like "Haruka Kanata" from Naruto. That was not AX sponsored but still held at the same time.  I'd really like to see more rock/metal at AX.

I'd like to see Hiroyuki Sawano, nZk. We had Kajiura and Sawano is kind of the same thing. He's a composer who does a lot of collabs.

C: He did some work with Aimer as well. I'd like to see ChouCho too. She did a lot of Vocaloid covers and got popular. She did some Fate work for Prisma Illya.

R: Will they bring Love Live again?

B: That's a good question. They started like a ladder. The first year didn't even have the whole group or a performance; they just had a free talk and showed some anime. I still paid $40 because it was Love Live, you know? Then last year they had the combo concert with im@s, Walkure (Macross Delta), and Wake Up Girls, who also just disbanded. Awkward, going from performing overseas to nonexistant in the span of a year. The concert was great though. This year they had the one man concert which blew the doors off everything and I'm not sure what they can do to top that next year.

C: Hopefully they'll not have two sales on at the same time next year (Super Live Premiere sales and Love Live general sales). I went through hell to buy these tickets.

R: I remember the days when AX didn't charge to go to the concerts but that's what happens when you grow too big.

B: Can you imagine the lines if they were still free? I still enjoy Anisong Matsuri and it's one of the best parts of Anime Expo year after year. We'll see you next year and hopefully the lineup will somehow top this one.

Final Fantasy Distant Worlds/New World @ Otakon 2018

Distant Worlds and A New World performances are familiar names in the world of video games, and this year at Otakon 2018, they were the main musical performances. This year, we had the privilege to witness both of these performances in one weekend, led by Grammy Award Winner Arnie Roth and his son Eric Roth for their respective concerts. Not only that, they were accompanied by legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu and performed many outstanding scores from the Final Fantasy series on Friday and Sunday afternoon.

The performances were outstanding with many of the classics you’d expect to hear at most Distant Worlds and New World set lists like Zanarkand and One-Winged Angel. At one point, Nobuo Uematsu even joined the choir ensemble to sing along with the audience during One-Winged Angel in the Distant Worlds Concert. This really brought the audience engagement to another level as everyone was singing along to the song. The other notable song that you can’t sit through a Final Fantasy concert without hearing is the Chocobo Medley. The Medley provided a very light-hearted ending to the New World concert and Otakon itself that left smiles on audience’s faces with its humorous tone.

If you’re a Final Fantasy Fan, your weekend doesn’t end much better than this as many of the songs played also brought a big nostalgic factor. Iconic songs like Liberi Fatali brought me back to the Final Fantasy VIII opening that I’ve watched more times than I can count. Fragments of Memories also held a special place in my heart too as it transported me back to the exact point in Final Fantasy VIII with Laguna’s journey.

The Distant Worlds and New World concerts play at many cities around the world, and if you have not had a chance to experience it, I would highly recommend to give it a try.

Live Report: SCANDAL North American Tour 2018

Last week, the Japanese band SCANDAL made their triumphant return to North America after a few long years. New York's Playstation Theater played host to their first showing in the US followed by performances in California, Mexico and Texas. We were able to catch the San Francisco show at the Regency Ballroom which marked the first time SCANDAL has returned to San Francisco in approximately a decade. The tour is titled "Special Thanks" and also coincides with the tenth anniversary of their first US tour.

SCANDAL has been active for just over a dozen years after forming in 2006.  The band has had the same members since the beginning and consists of Haruna (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mami (lead guitar), Tomomi (bass), and Rina (drums). The quartet met during high school in Osaka vocal school and signed with indie label Kitty Records two years later. They soon made their major label debut under Epic Records Japan where they remain to this day.

The band played without any opening act, and the setlist totaled in at just under twenty songs for a solid 90-minute show. Fans were so excited that they started to line up outside the venue since the early morning. I had fully expected the show to focus on their newest album “Honey,” but it turned out that they had incorporated a little bit of everything from their previous albums with “Honey” only making up about a quarter of the setlist. The pace of the concert was fantastic with the band kicking things off with the song "Shunkan Sentimental" which was featured in the anime Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. That really got the crowd going, and the energy carried all the way through to the end. I enjoyed it when they played "Departure" and "Sisters" towards the middle of the concert as it provided a nice change of pace compared with the high tempo songs of the beginning.

Everyone attending seemed to be really having a good time. At the San Francisco show, there were people dancing in the back, and at least one individual was doing full on Wotagei with penlights too. The crowd had their hands up and were matching the band beat for beat throughout the show. I’m sure if the crowd at the front could have followed Mami’s example as she energetically danced around the stage, they would have.  For those who have them, make sure to bring your SCANDAL towel because that will be getting some use. For those who don’t have them, you can pick one up at the merch table. Crowd participation is always fun, and spinning a towel above your head makes its return this tour.

Toward the end of the concert, the band performed a lot of songs from their new album "Honey" and finished off with the timeless classic "Love Survive" from "Baby Action."  What truly concluded the night on a high note was the encore consisting of "Shoujo S" and "Doll." Those are two staple songs that most would expect to hear from a SCANDAL concert, and if anything, no concert would be complete without them. During the encore crowd's energy went through the roof many singing along with the band.

The concert continues onward with a short jaunt to Mexico before returning for the final US show in Texas. Hopefully, they’ll continue to perform in America and add San Francisco to the list of regular tour stops. It’s a rare treat whenever SCANDAL comes to town, and if given the chance, any fan or person even remotely curious should come on out. The tickets will not put a dent in your wallet, and you get a hell of a show.

BAND-MAID's World Domination Tour 2018 Kicks Off

Japan's hard-rocking Band-Maid makes their return to the US in just a few more days. The foreign leg of the World Domination 2018 tour begins on November 9th in Los Angeles before heading up to San Francisco on the 10th. After that, it's off to Europe with stops in Helsinki, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Berlin, and finally Munich.

The quintet consists of Kanami Touno and Miku Kobato on guitar, Akane Hirose on drums, bassist Misa, and Saiki Atsumi on lead vocals. Miku is also the leader and does vocals of her own. The band has had the same lineup since 2013 and their aesthetics are the product of Miku's time in a maid cafe. If Band-Maid's appearance leads to trepidation you are sorely mistaken; they are 100% legit in skill and ability and guarantee you a show that will rival any international rock act you can think of.

In addition, the band just released the full music video for "glory," the ED theme for the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. This comes one month after the short version video was uploaded and a live performance a week after release would be a nice addition to the tour. You can expect the setlist to include multiple songs from their newest album, "World Domination," which was released in February.

We last saw them in San Francisco just last year at J-Pop Summit 2017 where they lit the night up with a stellar performance featuring some of their hits like "Real Existence," "Freedom," and "The Non-Fiction Days." I was not expecting them to return so soon but it's a welcome surprise.

JPU Records (who have also signed other Japanese bands like LOVEBITES, The Gazette, and SCANDAL) handles the band's international releases. They are signed to Crown Stones in Japan.

Masters and princesses, are you ready?

The full tour is as follows:

Hyuna "The Queen's Back" Tour Report (SF & LA) 2017

Hyuna

Hyuna winded down her first North American tour in San Francisco and Los Angeles. did you miss it? If so fear not Wave-K is to the rescue with photos, video, and coverage. Hyuna following the restructuring of CUBE Entertainment has become the face of the agency. Hyuna doesn’t disappoint live either, if this is how most of her live performances go she deserves a little more credit in the industry. It’s very easy with all the K-POP idols and groups coming to North America for good shows and artists to fly under the radar.

In San Francisco at The Regency Ballroom Hyuna fans (A-ings) who had attended other shows at the venue may have immediately noticed some differences regarding the barrier between the stage and crowd. That difference was that it was much closer than usual. If you looked at some of Hyuna’s earlier performances in the tour you may notice those were modified too. Hyuna has been lauded as the queen of fan service and after this performance and L.A. I'd have to confirm this to be true.  During her opening song “Roll Deep,” which had to be restarted due to technical difficulties that were already occurring before the start of the show, she interacted with fans explaining that this was the first time the music had actually cut off on her in the middle of the performance. Having been to many concerts in the past, when something like that happens the artist usually moves to the next song.  This wasn’t the case; despite the fact that Hyuna actually was almost finished with “Roll Deep” she ordered it to restart completely as in the entire concert opening.  Attendees may have also received an update on twitter that Hyuna had requested that the show be held in its entirety despite the errors.

Hyuna had different outfits for each stop, a different set-up on stage for each venue, and a different way she interacted with the crowd during each venue. Non-uniformity made this tour fun for the fans and showed us a side of Hyuna we’ve never seen before. In Los Angeles Hyuna took fan interaction to a different level with a stage setup that confused even the security guards at The NOVO. Security actually had to ask fans what was going on as the steps from the stage went directly into the crowd with no barrier in the center between the fans and Hyuna. On more than one occasion she would come down the steps and make the audience feel like they were part of the performance, and in some ways completely shattering the norm for K-POP performances especially by a female idol. Generally you’ll see an idol male or female keep a certain amount of distance between them and fans, Hyuna either is extremely brave and trusting of her fans or has some of the most well behaved fans in K-POP, or a combination of the two. With the exception of a few misbehaving attendees before the show and during the meet and greet there were no incidents.

Speaking of performance, as noted earlier about the technical difficulties in the beginning at The Regency, Hyuna appeared uncomfortable at first, and more than one source claims that she was actually feeling under the weather that night. As the performance continued, she looked more energetic and relaxed.  It’s worth noting that Hyuna performed the song "French Kiss" off her A-Talk album. The choreography has never been posted to CUBE unlike many of her songs that have been performed in the past. After seeing this performed twice I have to wonder why this wasn’t a feature track on the album. No choreography or music video has appeared online for "A-talk" and "U&ME" either. Hyuna told her audience that they may not be interested in the next song before performing these two tracks. The sharpness of the choreography suggests that possibly there’s a dance for all of her songs released. "U&ME" is the ultimate fan service song and it appeared as if that’s what she was going for as she interacted with the crowd a lot here holding hands with fan boys etc.

Oh and what’s an audience interaction without games? Fans were invited to ask her a question before the show, put it on a sticky note and maybe Hyuna would answer. We learned a little about Hyuna from this. Hyuna prefers shoes to heels, is an avid reader, and likes the Simpsons. Hyuna would also take questions from the crowd. The other two games included a dance contest and the other was a how well do you know Hyuna game where contestants tried to guess the same answer as Hyuna.  If you got one of those coveted spots on stage you were already a winner because most the contestants took selfie with Hyuna. The winner of the question game received a signed Polaroid of Hyuna that she actually kisses before handing it off to the winner. The dance contest winner got signed merch like a hoodie and a hat.

Unfortunately there are a few elements that San Francisco missed out on as the Regency Ballroom is a flat open floor space. This layout didn’t allow for her to come off stage and interact with fans the way she did in Los Angeles. Another element missed out was Hyuna starting her performance by throwing a jacket into the crowd, Los Angeles got a much more organized show as well as venue staff at the Novo did a very good job with line control and answering questions. For example by comparison, the meet and greet photo op was much more controlled than in San Francisco where the staff had difficulty getting people in a single file line. The Novo had several lines for the photo op where people were split into groups of 12. The group of 12 thing continues to puzzle me. For Apink last year 12 people made sense for the photo as there’s more than one member but with Hyuna there’s only one idol. I think groups of 4 to 8 people per photo would have been more ideal. Staff did have to remind a few badly behaved fans not to be taking photos and video during the hi-touch, it was to a point that there were threats that they would stop the meet and greet.

The setlist for the show was fairly short, something A-ings don’t really understand as Hyuna has a discography long enough to have a 12-14 song concert. The fan interaction and games made the show enjoyable, and while this may be a once in a lifetime experience for North American fans, we certainly hope Hyuna will make a second run of touring here. It’s still early in the year but the “Queen is Back” tour could easily be a candidate for concert of the year even with the influx of K-Pop coming to this side of the world in the next couple of months.
